HEALTH EQUITY INITIATIVES: Our music therapy students complete a minimum of 212 hours of supervised clinical experience prior to internship, where they complete the remainder of the 1200 hours required for music therapy board certification. These clinical experiences are all completed with populations of clients with special needs throughout the Charleston area. Clinical sites include children served by the Metanoia Community Development Corporation in North Charleston, My Sister's House domestic violence shelter, clients with Alzheimer's/dementia, well-elderly, Midland Park Elementary and North Charleston Elementary preschool intervention classroom for students with speech & language delays, Coastal Center for adults with developmental disabilities, children with complex medical and developmental needs (many of whom are in foster care) at the Medical University of South Carolina's medically fragile children's program, premature infants and their families at Trident Health System, etc. Students then discuss current issues in health and human services (including Unnatural Causes) within a clinical seminar, making transfers to their clinical site assignment for that semester.
