Community Health Councils

LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA, U.S.A.

ORGANIZATION TYPE: Non-for-profit advocacy

FOCUS AREA: Children / Families, Food security / Nutrition, Health Care Delivery, Public Health, Public Policy, Race / Ethnicity

HEALTH EQUITY INITIATIVES: CHC is at the forefront of advocacy to increase access to quality healthcare for uninsured and underinsured communities through active public participation and accountability. Over two decades, CHC has grown to represent a dynamic network of coalitions that act as vehicles for community engagement and education, capacity building, and locally-driven policy and resource development. Our three policy areas focus on Access & Quality of Healthcare, Community Health & Education, and Expansion & Quality of Coverage.

CHC's coalitions work to improve access to and quality of health and healthcare, and our African Americans Building a Legacy of Health coalition focuses on nutritional resources in particular. In a groundbreaking, multi-year study, CHC found that race, geography, and the availability of healthy foods play a substantial role in generating and sustaining health inequalities. CHC recently launched the Neighborhood Food Watch campaign to work with local retailers to help them follow the Standards of Quality established by our community to ensure nutritious food options in South Los Angeles.
