HEALTH EQUITY INITIATIVES: Partners for a Prosperous Athens is a community-led initiative to address the underlying causes of the 28.7% poverty rate in Athens Clarke County, Georgia. In March 2007, the community made Healthcare one of the top 10 OneAthens Initiatives, reaffirming the key role healthcare plays in breaking the cycle of poverty and strengthening the economy. The OneAthens Healthcare Team was formed to research best practices and craft a program that fit Athens' needs. The team's proposal includes the following goals:

1. Create a local health coverage plan for primary care
2. Support designation as a Federally Qualified Health Center for Athens Neighborhood Health Center
3. Develop clinics into Medical Home model
4. Create a Health Outreach and Navigator Network
5. Create a Physician Referral System
6. Create a Medication Assistance Program
7. Develop Fundraising Strategies.

Athens Clarke County's major institutions are in the process of implementing these recommendations, but community oversight is still needed to ensure that each goal is achieved. For more information, please visit our site.
