1. When will UNNATURAL CAUSES air again on my local PBS station?
PBS will rebroadcast the series on four Fridays at 10 PM beginning October 9, 2009 (the national “feed”).  However, local PBS stations are free to run it when they wish.  Contact Program or Viewer Services at your local PBS station to ask them if they will schedule the series at the PBS national feed or another time.

2. How can I order the series on DVD and how much does it cost?
UNNATURAL CAUSES
can be purchased from California Newsreel online at www.newsreel.org or by calling toll free, 877-811-7495. Prices for the four-hour series (including public performance rights) are as follows:

  • $295 for colleges, universities, corporations, and government agencies. Includes a 3-Year Password protected Site/Local Streaming License for institutions with that capability.
  • $49.95 for high schools, public libraries, and nonprofit, community-based organizations (such as church groups and civic organizations).
  • $29.95 per DVD for orders of 50 or more. Please call 415-284-7800 to place bulk orders.

3. May I screen the DVD for the general public?
YES. DVD purchases include public performance rights and the series may be screened directly to any and all audiences. However, please note: DVD purchase does NOT include nor imply the right to duplicate, recast, edit, abridge, or transform the series in any manner nor by any means.

4. May I show the series on our public access or community cable station?
NO. PBS holds exclusive rights to broadcast or cablecast the series through April 2012. You may use the DVD to host a public screening.

5. May I license video streaming or downloading rights?
YES. But you must purchase both a DVD and an additional streaming license. This license allows an institution to make one digital file from its DVD and to stream that file for the life of the file. Streaming must be password protected and limited to registered students, faculty, or employees of the institution. To order a DVD and a streaming license please call 877-811-7495.

6. May I edit or make copies of the series?
NO. DVD purchasers are prohibited from duplicating, recasting, editing, abridging, or transforming UNNATURAL CAUSES in any manner. You may post or e-distribute any or all video clips from the series that are posted on the Web site (see question 12). Note that the DVD includes a chapter menu, allowing you to screen just the sections you need.

7. Can I show selected scenes from the DVD?
YES. The DVD includes a chapter menu allowing you to screen the scenes that best fit your presentation. There is a detailed chapter guide available for download (pdf).

8. Is the series available in other languages?
YES. The DVD includes a Spanish audio version, accessible through the DVD menu. If you are screening to a mixed language audience, the best option is to switch on the English closed caption channel on the monitor, and select the Spanish audio from the DVD menu.

9. How can I get involved in the campaign for health equity?
Use the Action Toolkit: a step-by-step guide to planning screening events that educate, organize and advocate for health equity. The Toolkit provides facilitation tips, background, sample agendas, and methods for planning effective screenings that not only deepen understanding of issues, but serve as a step towards further involvement. Use the Connect-Up! database to locate organizations working for health equity in your region or interest area.

10. How can I get a copy of the Discussion Guide accompanying the series?
The Discussion Guide provides pre- and post-viewing activities, comprehension and discussion questions, and prompts for moving the conversation to what can—and should—be done to promote health equity. Download the Discussion Guide.

11. May I copy, duplicate, post and/or e-distribute handouts, logos, and other materials from the UNNATURAL CAUSES Web site?
YES. We encourage you to distribute widely the downloadable resources such as the handouts, logo, sample press releases, backgrounders, planning and policy guides and more found on our Handouts and Tools and Press Materials pages.

However, you must include the following language to credit the series appropriately on all such materials:

YES. Embedding code appears under each clip on our video clips page. Simply paste it into the code of your own site to embed the clip.
