Unnatural Causes has won the award for best Science/Television / Radio / Film program from the National Academies (National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Engineering and the National Research Council). Credit for this prestigious honor goes to so many: our talented production team, our wonderful advisors who graciously shared their work, reviewed ours and kept us on course, our generous – and trusting – funders, and perhaps most of all, those reading this Newsletter who gave real life to the series by using it so widely. MONEY-DRIVEN MEDICINE
WHAT’S WRONG WITH HEALTH CARE AND HOW TO FIX IT
Money-Driven Medicine, the first and only film to explore the economics underlying – and undermining – our dysfunctional health care system, is now available on DVD. Organizations around the country are using it to help dispel many of the myths about what’s really driving the cost and quality of health care. Health inequities suffered by populations of color cost $230 billion in excess direct medical expenses between 2003 and 2006, according to a new study commissioned by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies. click here

- Paid Sick Leave: Health Impact Assessment
As fear of a flu pandemic rises, we might ask: why is the US the only country in the rich world that does not mandate sick leave by law? A recent Health Impact Assessment (HIA) of the Healthy Families Act by Human Impact Partners demonstrates that paid sick leave would substantially benefit the health of all Americans.
