Ask the Experts: Your Questions Answered!

Did the series leave you wondering, "But what about..."? Do people ask questions at your screenings that you can't answer?

For six weeks following the PBS broadcast of UNNATURAL CAUSES, we solicited questions and reactions from the public, then invited 17 respected scholars and activists to respond. They have provided wonderful - and sometimes surprising - answers, which are now available to review, download, and pass around!

Sample questions include:
  • What about smoking and diet? Aren't we letting individuals off the hook by blaming society?
  • Should doctors take race into account when treating patients?
  • As a woman of color, it seems like the odds are against me. What can I do?
  • Why should affluent white people care about health inequities? Isn't inequality just inevitable?
  • How can health care professionals take social determinants into account when treating patients?
While you're online, be sure to visit our continuously updated Health Equity database.

Event Highlight: National School-Based Health Care Convention

Los Angeles, CA, June 25-28

The 2008 convention of the National Assembly on School-Based Health Care (NASBHC), co-hosted by the California School Health Centers Association, will focus on "taking action against health inequities."
  • Two scholars featured in UNNATURAL CAUSES will present the opening and closing plenaries: Dr. Anthony Iton, director of the Alameda County Public Health Department, and Dr. Margarita Alegría, director of the Center for Multicultural Mental Health Research.

  • A three-hour workshop will explore how school health centers can use UNNATURAL CAUSES with middle and high-school students, teachers, and parents to educate and advocate for health equity on campus and in the community.
Partner Profile: Sonoma County, California

Sonoma County Department of Health Services partnered with local public broadcast station KCRB to produce an independent program related to UNNATURAL CAUSES. The 26-minute segment aired just after our broadcast, and was designed to spur dialogue on what residents can - and should - do to tackle health inequities in Sonoma County. The segment includes interviews with community leaders sharing local perspectives, and data from regional organizations:
  • Community Action Partnership of Sonoma County
  • Sonoma County Health Officer
  • Redwood Empire Food Bank
  • North Bay Labor Council
  • Southwest Community Health Center
  • Sonoma County Superintendent of Schools
The series and local program were well-received by the community, and have since been used at other events to stimulate conversation about the underlying causes of health inequities.

On June 2, Dr. Nancy Adler, principal investigator for the MacArthur Research Network report Reaching for a Healthier Life: Facts on Socioeconomic Status and Health in the U.S. and advisor to UNNATURAL CAUSES, discussed the report's findings in a panel discussion on local impacts and initiatives to address health disparities in Sonoma County.

To submit your own partner profile, please send us a description (225 words or fewer) of how your organization is using the series to educate, mobilize and advocate for change.
