Find Out What's Happening

Around the country, community groups, public health departments and other interested organizations are using the documentary series for community dialogues, policy briefings and capacity building to educate, organize and advocate for health equity.

When the film was first released, we made efforts to track screenings as they occurred around the country. As more and more groups and organizations have adopted UNNATURAL CAUSES as a tool for their own work, tracking has become impossible. As of April 2009, we have stopped updating the calendar.

To learn how to organize your own event, see "What You Can Do," download the Action Toolkit and read the Taking Action (PDF) handout.

Date for our screening is March 20 and we will do two showings and two panels at our local art house, Cine, which is a swell location.  First show will be free to anyone with a student ID and will be followed by a youth panel: a journalism grad student from UGA, two local high school students working on a community-wide anti-poverty initiative, and a local public health expert.  Second show will be a fund-raiser for OneAthens Community Foundation, $25/head for wine and cheese, movie and panel. I’ll moderate this panel and it will feature a local African-American physician, the head of the anti-poverty group’s health task force, and a public health professor from UGA.

Oct 9 OK Collinsville Meeting to develop a health improvement plan for Tulsa County

In light of reports on growing disparities in health outcomes and following a town hall meeting on health equity (featuring Unnatural Causes), a County Health Improvement Plan is under development. Based on a tool developed by NACCHO and the CDC, the "Pathways to Health" process is a partnership between all of the major players in our local public health system. As opposed to previous Tulsa-based health initiatives, its goal is to put the community in the driver's seat and the agencies in the backseat. The goal of this meeting is to let the citizens of Tulsa County identify their health priorities and direct agencies and local philanthropic organizations on how to allocate resources to address these priorities.

    WHEN: October 9th, 6-8pm
    WHERE: Collinsville City Hall
WHO: Residents of North Tulsa County (Collinsville, Skiatook, Sperry and Owasso)
WHY: In short, we are hoping to turn our health system on its head and start to chip away at the health disparities that are crippling Tulsa County.
